Dear Justice Seekers

As people of conscience and justice seekers, we know how difficult it is for the formerly imprisoned to reintegrate into a society that often marginalizes those who have been incarcerated. This circumstance serves as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to advocate for inclusivity and support for all individuals affected by racial and religious profiling and state-sanctioned Islamophobia. To foster a more inclusive and equitable Muslim American community, we urge community members and justice seekers to consider the following actions in your work for social justice, community building, and support those directly impacted by government overreach and state violence in your own community:

  1. Center Former Prisoners’ Voices: Actively involve former political prisoners in discussions and decision-making processes. Their lived experiences can provide critical insights and inform our strategies for change.

  2. Develop Collaborative Initiatives: Create programs and initiatives that specifically address the needs of individuals impacted by state violence and racism, ensuring they have a platform to contribute meaningfully.

  3. Build Support Networks: Establish mentorship and support systems that connect current community members with former prisoners, fostering resilience and understanding.

  4. Advocate for Inclusive Policies: Push for policies that protect the rights of formerly incarcerated individuals and ensure they have access to necessary resources and opportunities.

  5. Educate and Raise Awareness: Organize community events and workshops addressing the impacts of state violence by including directly affected people in your advocacy efforts and uplifting the voices of those formerly imprisoned.

By practicing inclusivity and collective action, Muslim Americans can create a more just and equitable community and become a leading example for other communities to follow.
